Andaman and Nicobar islands were in Japanese hands from 1942 to 1945.
On 29th December 1943, Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose accompanied by Saravshri Anand Mohan Sahay, Captain Rawat ADC and Col. D.S. Raju, personal physician of Netaji arrived at Port Blair ,Andaman in a Japanese Air Force aircraft. He was received by the Japanese admiral Ishikawa at Port Blair.
There was a guard of honor. Bose was then ceremonially taken in cavalcade to Aberdeen jetty and from there in motorboats to Ross Islands.
On the following day, 30th December 1943, the National Flag was hoisted by Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose on the liberated Indian soil, an act first of its kind in the history of British rule in India, many years before the great land mass of subcontinent could exchange the Union Jack for the Indian Tricolor Flag.
There is a very interesting story attached with this visit. In 1970's,during parliament session, the communist leader Samar Guha rasied the issue of changing the name of Andaman and Nicobar to Shaheed(for Andaman) and Swaraj(for Nicobar) as per Netaji's desire. This was opposed by K.R. Ganesh,
A minister in Indira Gandhi's government
He drew the attention of house to the for resentment of people of Andaman for the role payed by Netaji,or rather absence of it,during their .traumatic days under the Japanese army.
Guha like many others were unaware of this. He then wanted a clarification from Ganesh,if the atrocities by the Japanese had taken place before or after Bose's visit to Port Balir.
Ganesh's reply has become famous-
"Before,During and After"
