Origin of name Andaman

cloud computing     Know Andaman

In the writing of the famous astronomer, mathematician, and geographer,Claudius Ptolemaeus, ( Ptolemy),mentioned a group of island occupied by cannibals that he called Agadaemon. That  group of island has been taken to be Andamans, and the name of rendition of Agedaman, or Angdeman ,or Andaman.
Some chroniclers say ,in the Ramayana, the island as the first choice of a site for a bridge to Lanka to rescue Sita. This led to association of island with Human, and to the Malayans calling the inhabitants Handuman, and thence Andaman.
The name seem indeed to have been in currency from before the Christian era, with some degree of adaptation to the language of the chronicler. In the seventh century AD,the Chinese traveller,I-Tsing,who appers to have been to both the Andaman and the Nicobar Island-which he call the Andaban and Yeng-t'o-mang or the 'Land of the Naked' respectively-gives one of the most credible description of the place when he describes the transactions with the tribals involving the barter of coconuts for iron. The account two Arab travellers in the ninth century reverts to the fantastic, with account of cannibals eating raw flesh.
Marco polo in thirteenth century,on his way to China from Venice,is no better, with his tale of 'idolaters' that 'eat everybody that they can catch', live on 'flash and even assayed a landing on his visit to 'Angamanian'.
Friar Odoric in the fourteen century;Nicolo conti in the fifteenth;Caesar Fredricke in the sixteenth and Captain Alexander Hamilton, at the beginning of the eighteenth, seem similarly to have relied on imagination rather than observation in their account of the inhabitants, convinced as they were that the Island were peopled by the most savage if cannibals.
